Are you chronically dehydrated?

Did you know that 75% of American adults are chronically dehydrated? This is particularly true for those aged 65 or older whose sense of thirst is diminished.

Through the aging process the body loses water content making all our joints and soft tissues stiffer and less resilient. For those who are diabetic or prediabetic, consuming water and other zero calorie beverages helps to wash the sugar out of your system and rehydrate your blood. The recommended daily dose of water is 13, 8 oz. glasses of water per day for men and 9, 8 oz. glasses for women. Some of the prevalent signs of dehydration include fatigue, thirst, dry skin and lips, dark urine or reduced urine output, headaches, muscle cramps, lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, orthostatic hypotension, and palpitations.

What you can do to consume more water:

Make your water more enticing by flavoring it with citrus fruit, such as lemons, limes, or oranges

Eat foods that have a high water content, such as melon, cucumbers, lettuce and celery

Make it a game and track it! Set multiple goals for the day and tik off each time you meet each goal

Create routines and combine habits. For example, “when I’m making my breakfast, I drink a glass of water.”
